About Ampilatwatja
Ampilatwatja is a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, located approximately 325 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs on the traditional lands of the Alyawarre people, administered by the Barkly Regional Council. Situated within the Utopia aboriginal homeland on the Barkly Tableland at an elevation of approximately 397 metres, the community had a 2021 Census population of 439, with around 90 per cent of residents identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. The community holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Alyawarre people, who maintain strong connections to country across this vast and remote landscape.
Ampilatwatja has a community school and the Ampilatwatja Health Centre as its essential services, providing education and primary healthcare to residents. The community has gained international recognition through the Artists of Ampilatwatja — an art centre founded in 1999 that produces distinctive paintings characterised by fine dot work and vibrant colours in the Eastern Anmatyerre tradition. Road access can be challenging, particularly during the wet season when dirt tracks become impassable, and the community has faced ongoing challenges with water quality, internet access, and telecommunications infrastructure. A 4WD-capable vehicle is strongly recommended for visiting Ampilatwatja.
Ampilatwatja falls under postcode 872 and is governed by Barkly Regional Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
