About Ballandean
Ballandean is a rural town and locality in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, situated in the heart of the Granite Belt wine country approximately 230 kilometres south-west of Brisbane and around 15 kilometres south of Stanthorpe. The locality covers nearly 200 square kilometres of open granite country at elevations of around 850 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest-altitude wine-growing areas in Australia. At the 2021 Census, Ballandean recorded a population of 316 people, with the Severn River marking part of its northern boundary and the New South Wales border not far to the south.
Ballandean is best known as home to Ballandean Estate, Queensland's oldest continuously operated family winery, and sits at the centre of the Granite Belt Wine Country — Australia's highest cool-climate wine region. The surrounding area draws visitors year-round to cellar doors, farm gate produce, cosy cabin stays, and the spectacular granite boulders and spring wildflowers of nearby Girraween National Park. For day-to-day needs, the neighbouring town of Stanthorpe provides supermarkets, schools, and services, while Ballandean itself remains one of regional Queensland's most distinctive and scenic wine destinations.
Ballandean falls under postcode 4382 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
