About Barossa Goldfields

Barossa Goldfields is a small historic locality in the Barossa Council area of South Australia, situated approximately 8 kilometres west of Williamstown and about 60 kilometres northeast of Adelaide. With a population of just 63 at the 2021 census, it covers around 9.5 square kilometres on the southwestern edge of the Barossa Valley. The locality is bounded by the South Para River and is named for the gold rush that swept the area in the late 1860s, when 778 kilograms of gold were eventually produced.

Barossa Goldfields preserves a fascinating chapter of South Australian history — gold was discovered here in October 1868 by publican Job Harris, drawing 4,000 prospectors within weeks. Today, the heritage mining sites are preserved within Para Wirra Recreation Park, offering walking trails through the old diggings among native bushland. The locality is now essentially rural, with hobby farms and bushland properties.
