About Belyando
Belyando is a vast and sparsely populated outback locality in central Queensland, covering an enormous area of approximately 5,447 square kilometres within the Isaac Regional Council area. Located in the upper Belyando River catchment, the locality sits in the expansive Bowen Basin pastoral region approximately 400 kilometres north-west of Rockhampton and close to the service town of Clermont. The 2021 Census recorded a population of just 307 residents, with a strikingly male-dominant ratio (79 per cent male) reflecting the dominance of mining, pastoral, and agricultural industries in the area.
Belyando is fundamentally a cattle and pastoral locality, with extensive sheep and cattle stations — including the historic Yacamunda Station established by the Earl family — forming the backbone of the local economy alongside the coal mining operations of the broader Bowen Basin. The nearby town of Clermont, approximately 60 kilometres away, serves as the main service centre for the region, providing fuel, supermarkets, medical care, and community facilities. Life in Belyando is defined by vast open landscapes, self-reliance, and the distinctive rhythm of remote outback Queensland.
Belyando falls under postcode 4721 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
