About Boulia
Boulia is an outback town and locality in far western Queensland, situated on the banks of the Burke River approximately 240 kilometres south of Mount Isa and 190 kilometres east of the Northern Territory border. Covering a large area of 145 square kilometres, the locality serves as the administrative centre of the Boulia Shire, one of Queensland's most sparsely populated local government areas. With a population of 314 residents, Boulia is a remote outback community where cattle and sheep grazing dominate the local economy across the vast surrounding pastoral stations.
Boulia is famous as the home of the Min Min Light, a mysterious outback phenomenon that has been reported in the region for over a century and is celebrated at the dedicated Min Min Encounter centre in town. The annual Boulia Camel Races draw thousands of visitors each year, making it one of outback Queensland's most popular events. Despite its remoteness, the town offers essential services including a hospital, school, fuel, and the Desert Sands Hotel, providing a genuine outback experience for travellers on the Boulia-Winton Road or the Adventure Way. Social housing accounts for a significant proportion of the housing stock, reflecting the town's role as a service hub for the Indigenous communities of western Queensland.
Boulia falls under postcode 4829 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
