About Boyer
Boyer is a small industrial and rural locality in the Derwent Valley of Tasmania, situated approximately 35 kilometres north of Hobart on the banks of the Derwent River. With a 2021 Census population of 58 residents, it is best known as the site of a major paper mill that has been a significant employer in the valley for decades. The locality falls within the Derwent Valley Council area, in a region of productive hop and apple growing country.
The nearby town of New Norfolk, approximately 5 kilometres away, provides residents with shopping, schools, medical services, and community facilities. The Derwent Valley is known for its hops, heritage buildings, and the scenic Derwent River, popular for fishing and canoeing. Boyer's industrial character contrasts with the surrounding rural and river landscape. Regular bus services connect the valley to Hobart, and the drive to the capital takes approximately 35 minutes.
Boyer falls under postcode 7140 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
