About Brooms Head

Brooms Head is a small coastal village in northern New South Wales, located 20 kilometres south of Maclean and 514 kilometres north-east of Sydney within the Clarence Valley Council area. With a population of just 271 at the 2021 census, the village sits at the edge of the Pacific Ocean on a sheltered headland flanked by surf beaches, the Sandon River estuary, and pockets of coastal heath. First named in 1870 after a broom washed ashore from the wreck of the schooner 'Eureka', Brooms Head has a long history as a camping and fishing destination for families from the Lower Clarence region.

Brooms Head is beloved for its unhurried pace, unpolluted beaches, and strong connections to the land of the Yaegl people, whose archaeological presence spans the headland and surrounding Sandon coastal area. The village draws seasonal holidaymakers and a small permanent community of retirees and sea-changers who value clean surf, excellent fishing, and birdwatching in the adjacent Sandon Nature Reserve. Facilities are intentionally minimal — a general store, boat ramp, and camping area — preserving the charm of one of the North Coast's last undeveloped coastal villages.

Brooms Head falls under postcode 2463 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Clarence electorate.
