About Butterwick
Butterwick is a small rural locality in the Lower Hunter region of New South Wales, situated in the Port Stephens and Paterson area approximately 15 kilometres north of Maitland and 12 kilometres west of Raymond Terrace. Covering 12 square kilometres of fertile Hunter River floodplain and low-lying agricultural land, the locality recorded a population of 190 at the 2021 census. The area shares a landscape character with the broader Butterwick Plain, historically one of the Hunter Valley's most productive agricultural districts, supporting dairy farming, beef cattle, citrus orchards and market gardens. The locality is bounded by the meandering channels of the lower Hunter River system.
Butterwick's residents enjoy a tranquil rural lifestyle in easy reach of the Hunter Valley's growing towns and services. Raymond Terrace (approximately 12 km east) serves as the nearest commercial centre with supermarkets, schools and medical facilities, while Maitland (15 km south) provides rail connections to Newcastle and Sydney along with a wider range of retail and healthcare. The Port Stephens foreshore, including Anna Bay, Fingal Bay and Nelson Bay, is approximately 40 kilometres to the east, offering coastal recreation popular with Hunter Valley families. The combination of affordable rural properties, the Hunter Valley's wine tourism scene and proximity to both Newcastle and Sydney makes the Butterwick area attractive to farming families and rural-residential buyers.
Butterwick falls under postcode 2321 and is governed by the Port Stephens Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Paterson, while state elections fall under the Upper Hunter electorate.
