About Cape Douglas
Cape Douglas is a small coastal locality in the south-east of South Australia, situated approximately 24 kilometres south of Mount Gambier and around 386 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, within the District Council of Grant local government area. The locality stretches along the Southern Ocean coastline from Jones Bay in the west to Middle Point Headland in the east, encompassing the Cape Douglas headland and Umpherstone Bay. Established as a locality in 1996 and named after Douglas Point — a coastal feature within its boundaries — Cape Douglas is primarily agricultural land with coast-adjacent conservation zones.
The Douglas Point Conservation Park, which falls within the locality, protects coastal heath and wildlife habitat on the Southern Ocean foreshore. The area is part of the Limestone Coast region, known throughout Australia for its premium wine production, cave systems, and Blue Lake at Mount Gambier. Agricultural land use dominates the interior of the locality, with sheep and cattle grazing on the fertile soils typical of the South Australian south-east. Mount Gambier, the largest city in regional South Australia, provides all major services including hospitals, schools, and the broader attractions of the Limestone Coast.
Cape Douglas falls under postcode 5291 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mount Gambier electorate.
