About Cobdogla
Cobdogla is a small heritage town in South Australia's Riverland region, situated on the banks of the Murray River approximately 232 kilometres north-east of Adelaide within the Berri Barmera Council area. With a 2021 Census population of 375, the town covers around 15 square kilometres and lies 6 kilometres east of the larger service centre of Barmera. Established as a town in 1919 as part of the Murray River irrigation schemes, Cobdogla carries a rich history tied to irrigation agriculture and river life.
Cobdogla is home to the Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum, a celebrated heritage attraction maintained by the National Trust of South Australia that features a pair of rare Humphrey pumps — including one still in working order — along with a 3-kilometre operating railway with steam and diesel locomotives. The historic Cobdogla Homestead Ruins and the former pumping station are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. Residents enjoy a relaxed Riverland lifestyle with the Murray River on their doorstep, and nearby Barmera offers supermarkets, schools, health services, and lakeside recreational areas at Lake Bonney.
Cobdogla falls under postcode 5346 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
