About Cooltong
Cooltong is a rural locality in the Renmark Paringa Council area of South Australia's Riverland region, situated adjacent to the town of Renmark along the Murray River. With a population of approximately 322 residents spread across 31 square kilometres, the area is characterised by its irrigated fruit growing land, citrus and stone fruit orchards, and connection to the river culture that defines this part of the state. The name Cooltong derives from a local Aboriginal word believed to mean "lizard place", and has been associated with the area since at least the late 1890s.
Residents benefit from close proximity to Renmark's town centre, which provides supermarkets, schools, medical services, and community facilities. The Murray River is central to daily life in the Cooltong area, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, and riverside recreation. The Riverland's warm climate and agricultural heritage give the locality a distinct country character, popular with horticultural workers, retirees, and those drawn to a relaxed, river-focused lifestyle.
Cooltong falls under postcode 5341 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
