About Cudlee Creek
Cudlee Creek is a small historic locality nestled in the Adelaide Hills, approximately 30 kilometres east of Adelaide within the Adelaide Hills Council local government area. The name is likely derived from the Kaurna word kadli, meaning Dingo Creek, reflecting the area's deep First Nations heritage. First settled by Europeans in 1838, Cudlee Creek developed as a fruit-growing and farming community, and its historic cold store building — constructed in 1922 for a fruit-growers' cooperative — remains a distinctive local landmark. The locality covers around 43.5 square kilometres of hilly bushland terrain and had a population of 425 residents at the 2021 Census.
Cudlee Creek is home to the Gorge Wildlife Park, one of the largest privately owned animal parks in Australia, and sections of the famous Heysen Trail pass through the town alongside popular Fox Creek mountain bike trails in the nearby Mount Crawford forest. The locality has a pub, caravan park, tennis courts, golf course, and the Cudlee Cafe. Cudlee Creek Conservation Park on the River Torrens protects diverse woodland including stringybark, red gum, and blue gum. The area appeals to outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a bush lifestyle within easy reach of Adelaide, though residents rely on private vehicles as public transport is limited to a Link SA coach service.
Cudlee Creek falls under postcode 5232 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
