About Culcairn
Culcairn is a small country town in the south-east Murray region of New South Wales, located on the Olympic Highway between Albury and Wagga Wagga within the Greater Hume Shire. Sitting at an elevation of around 215 metres on the undulating western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, the town is 514 kilometres south-west of Sydney and 53 kilometres north of Albury. At the 2021 Census, Culcairn had a population of 1,483 residents. The town serves as an important local supply and service centre for surrounding rural communities including Henty, Gerogery, and Walla Walla.
Culcairn offers a relaxed rural lifestyle anchored by agriculture, particularly cereal cropping and wool production. The town's median weekly rent of around $220 makes it one of the more affordable communities in regional New South Wales. Residents enjoy a strong community spirit, with local schools, sporting clubs, and a main street lined with essential services. The median age of 44 reflects a settled population with strong roots in the land. Albury–Wodonga's larger retail and medical facilities are just an hour's drive south, giving Culcairn residents access to regional services without sacrificing a quieter country life.
Culcairn falls under postcode 2660 and is governed by Greater Hume Shire Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Albury electorate.
