About Curlwaa
Curlwaa is a small locality on the New South Wales side of the Murray River in far south-western New South Wales, approximately 4 kilometres east of Wentworth within the Wentworth Shire. It is historically significant as the site of the first government irrigation scheme in New South Wales, established in 1890, and its agricultural character continues today. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 496, spread across around 39 square kilometres of irrigated pastoral and agricultural land.
The locality is notable for the Abbotsford Bridge, which spans the Murray River between Curlwaa and Yelta in Victoria — the northernmost crossing point on the Murray before the South Australian border. The Silver City Highway and Calder Highway pass through the area, connecting it easily to Wentworth and the Victorian city of Mildura approximately 16 kilometres to the south. Residents access services in Wentworth and Mildura, with the Murray River offering recreational fishing, boating, and camping opportunities.
