About Currowan
Currowan is a small rural locality on the South Coast of New South Wales, situated approximately 200 kilometres south of Sydney near the Shoalhaven–Eurobodalla border. With a recorded 2021 population of just 72 residents, it is one of the smallest communities in the region, characterised by bushland acreage and undulating coastal hinterland. The locality sits inland from Batemans Bay, surrounded by state forest and National Park land that forms part of the greater South Coast bushland corridor. Currowan gained wider attention during the catastrophic 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires, which severely impacted the area.
Life in Currowan is deeply rural and off-the-beaten-path, attracting residents who value privacy, space, and a close connection to the natural environment. The surrounding Currowan State Forest and nearby Murramarang National Park offer outstanding bushwalking, wildlife watching, and access to the region's dramatic coastline. Batemans Bay, around 30 kilometres to the east, provides the nearest shopping, schools, and services. The community is small and self-reliant, drawing people who seek a quiet rural retreat within a few hours of Canberra or Sydney.
Currowan falls under postcode 2536 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the South Coast electorate.
