About Dhurringile
Dhurringile is a small rural locality in Victoria's Goulburn Valley, situated approximately 10 kilometres north of Murchison and around 30 kilometres south-east of Shepparton, within the City of Greater Shepparton. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 369, a figure significantly shaped by the presence of HM Prison Dhurringile — a medium-security correctional facility occupying the historic 65-room Dhurringile mansion, built in 1875 by squatter James Winter. The name Dhurringile is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'emu's back,' a reference to the shape of the hill on which the mansion stands.
Beyond the prison estate, Dhurringile is a quiet agricultural locality surrounded by the irrigated farmland and orchards typical of the Goulburn Valley, with the Waranga Basin reservoir — one of Victoria's major water storage facilities — lying to the west. The locality has a small primary school serving the local community, though student numbers have declined sharply in recent years. Murchison, the nearest township, provides basic services and facilities, while Shepparton's extensive retail, healthcare, and education options are easily accessible to the north.
Dhurringile falls under postcode 3610 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Euroa (Northern Victoria) electorate.
