About Dumbleyung
Dumbleyung is a small town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, located approximately 267 kilometres south-east of Perth on State Route 107, between Wagin to the north and Lake Grace to the south. Administered by the Shire of Dumbleyung, the town covers an area of around 255 square kilometres of farmland and semi-arid landscape typical of the WA Wheatbelt. Established in 1907, Dumbleyung has a population of approximately 299 residents and a strong agricultural heritage centred on wheat and sheep farming.
Dumbleyung is perhaps best known for Lake Dumbleyung, a large salt lake adjacent to the town where British racing driver Donald Campbell famously set a world water speed record of 444.7 km/h in his jet-powered craft Bluebird K7 in 1964 — a feat commemorated by a local shrine in the restored Dumbleyung Tavern. The town provides essential services including a primary school, hotel, and small retail stores. Dumbleyung is very car-dependent, with no rail or regular bus services; residents rely on private vehicles for access to larger centres such as Wagin, around 39 kilometres to the north.
Dumbleyung falls under postcode 6350 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
