About Duncan
Duncan is a remote rural locality on southern Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, covering approximately 174 square kilometres of open farmland and mallee scrub within the Yorke Peninsula Council area. Situated near the southern tip of the peninsula between Edithburgh and Warooka, the locality supports cereal cropping and sheep grazing across its flat to gently undulating terrain — a landscape typical of southern Yorke Peninsula's extensive farming country. With a population of around 67 residents, Duncan is one of the more remote agricultural communities on the peninsula.
The towns of Edithburgh and Warooka, each approximately 15 to 25 kilometres distant, provide the nearest basic services including fuel, a post office, and a small general store, while Yorketown, the main service centre for southern Yorke Peninsula, is accessible within 30 kilometres. The peninsula's coastline — with its sheltered bays, excellent fishing, diving on the ex-HMAS Hobart wreck near Edithburgh, and the scenic Innes National Park at the southern tip — offers outstanding recreational opportunities for Duncan residents. Adelaide is approximately 220 kilometres to the north-east via the Yorke Highway and requires a ferry crossing or the long road route.
Duncan falls under postcode 5223 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
