About Eldorado
Eldorado is a small historic town in the Rural City of Wangaratta, north-east Victoria, situated approximately 20 kilometres south-east of Wangaratta on the Eldorado Plain. Named in 1840 and later transformed by the gold rush of the 1850s, the locality has a 2021 Census population of 382 residents spread across 56 square kilometres of agricultural and pastoral land. The town's character is shaped by its gold mining heritage, quiet rural surrounds, and a closely-knit community that has endured well beyond the boom-and-bust cycles of its past.
Eldorado is best known for its remarkably preserved historic gold dredge — the largest surviving intact bucket dredge in Australia, built in 1935–36 for the Cocks Eldorado Gold Dredging Company and now an Engineering Heritage National Marker. The town centre features a general store and McEvoy Tavern, famously known as the smallest pub in Victoria. The surrounding landscape is characterised by open farmland and gentle creek flats, attracting history enthusiasts, heritage trail visitors, and those seeking a genuine slice of rural Victorian life.
Eldorado falls under postcode 3746 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
