About Elizabeth Town
Elizabeth Town is a small rural locality in the Meander Valley region of northern Tasmania, situated along the Bass Highway approximately 57 kilometres west of Launceston and 9 kilometres north-west of Deloraine. Administered by the Meander Valley Council, the area spans around 51 square kilometres of fertile agricultural land at the foot of the Great Western Tiers. With a population of approximately 299 residents, Elizabeth Town is a quiet farming community known for its rich pastoral heritage and cool-climate produce.
Elizabeth Town is renowned for its artisan food producers, including Ashgrove Cheese Farm — a popular visitor stop on the Bass Highway — alongside the organic dairy Elgaar Farm and Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm, which together make the area a notable destination for food tourism in Tasmania's north. The Bass Highway provides the main transport link between Devonport and Launceston, passing directly through the locality. There is no rail service in the area, and a car is essential; the nearby town of Deloraine offers a broader range of shops, schools, and services just 9 kilometres away.
Elizabeth Town falls under postcode 7304 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
