About Elliston
Elliston is a small coastal town on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, situated on the sheltered shores of Waterloo Bay approximately 641 kilometres west of Adelaide and 169 kilometres north-west of Port Lincoln. Administered by the District Council of Elliston, the town had a population of 375 at the 2021 Census, reflecting its role as the main service centre for a sparsely populated agricultural and pastoral region. The surrounding landscape is defined by rugged coastal cliffs, open farming country, and the vast expanse of the Great Australian Bight.
Elliston is well known among locals and visitors for its dramatic cliff-top views along the Great Ocean Drive, spectacular wildflower displays in spring, and the iconic limestone formation known as the Anxious Bay Lookout. The town offers essential services including a general store, fuel, a caravan park, and basic community facilities. Fishing, surfing, and wildlife watching — including seasonal encounters with southern right whales — attract visitors to the area, while the close-knit community character reflects the resilience of remote coastal living.
