About Gannawarra
Gannawarra is a small rural locality in northern Victoria, situated within the Gannawarra Shire approximately 280 kilometres north of Melbourne near the Murray River irrigation district. Covering around 57 square kilometres of flat agricultural land, the locality takes its name from the Gannawarra Creek and the surrounding wetland areas that form part of the broader Murray-Darling Basin system. The population recorded in the 2016 Census was just 73 people, a significant decline from earlier years, reflecting the broader depopulation trend seen across many small rural Victorian localities. The area is characterised by open farmland, wetlands, and a quiet pastoral lifestyle.
The Gannawarra region is well known for its rich birdlife and wetland ecology, attracting naturalists and birdwatchers who visit the nearby lakes and reed beds that support diverse waterbird populations. Agriculture — particularly irrigated horticulture, viticulture, and dairy farming — remains the economic backbone of the surrounding district. The nearby town of Kerang (approximately 15 kilometres east) serves as the main regional centre for shopping, health services, and community facilities. Swan Hill, about 50 kilometres north, provides a broader range of services for residents of the broader Gannawarra Shire.
Gannawarra falls under postcode 3568 and is governed by the Gannawarra Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Mallee, while state elections fall under the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
