About Garnant
Garnant is a small rural locality in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, located approximately 44 kilometres north of Rockhampton and about 2.5 kilometres from the Fitzroy River. Covering around 96 square kilometres, the locality is part of the prized Fitzroy River grazing belt and is widely regarded as a tightly held cattle district. The 2021 census recorded a population of 90 residents, reflecting its character as a working agricultural community. The locality was named after the Welsh town of Garnant in Glamorganshire, in honour of local resident Abraham Jones who played a leading role in establishing the former Garnant State School in 1930.
Cattle grazing is the dominant land use in Garnant, with properties in the district regularly participating in livestock sales at the Rockhampton cattle markets. The Fitzroy River forms a natural boundary to the locality and supports the pastoral enterprises through water access. The former Garnant State School, which operated from 1930 until its closure in 1969, is a reminder of the locality's earlier settlement history. Residents rely on Rockhampton for all services, schooling, and retail needs, with the regional city accessible via the local road network.
Garnant falls under postcode 4702 and is governed by the Rockhampton Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Flynn, while state elections fall under the Rockhampton electorate.
