About Gayndah

Gayndah holds the distinction of being Queensland's oldest officially gazetted town, established in 1849 on the banks of the Burnett River. With a population of around 1,950, this historic town serves as the administrative centre for the North Burnett Region, located 366 kilometres northwest of Brisbane. The area was once so significant it competed with Brisbane and Ipswich to become Queensland's capital when the state separated from New South Wales in 1859.

Today, Gayndah is the heart of Queensland's largest citrus-growing region, celebrated through the beloved biennial Orange Festival that draws visitors from across the state. The town offers genuine country charm with attractions including the Big Orange, Gayndah Museum, and Archers Lookout providing panoramic views from Duchess Mountain. Life here moves at a peaceful rural pace, attracting retirees, farmers, and those seeking affordable country living with a strong sense of community and rich agricultural heritage.

Gayndah falls under postcode 4625 and is governed by North Burnett Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
