About Greenough
Greenough is a historic rural locality situated approximately 24 kilometres south of Geraldton and 400 kilometres north of Perth, within the City of Greater Geraldton local government area. With a population of 344, this small settlement occupies the Greenough Flats floodplain along the Brand Highway, covering an area of around 67.5 square kilometres. The locality is characterised by its rich 19th-century colonial heritage, with numerous limestone buildings dating to the second half of the 1800s, many of which are managed by the National Trust of Australia.
Greenough is perhaps best known for its remarkable leaning trees — native species bent dramatically sideways by the relentless coastal winds that sweep across the flats, some tilted almost 90 degrees. This striking natural phenomenon has made Greenough a popular roadside stop for travellers on the Brand Highway between Perth and Geraldton. The nearby Greenough River and surrounding pastoral landscape lend the area a peaceful, unhurried quality that attracts heritage enthusiasts and those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle close to the amenities of Geraldton.
Greenough falls under postcode 6532 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
