About Gulargambone
Gulargambone is a small town on the banks of the Castlereagh River in the central-west plains of New South Wales, within Coonamble Shire approximately 382 kilometres north-west of Sydney and 102 kilometres north of Dubbo. With a population of around 528 residents spread across a vast area of more than 730 square kilometres, the town functions as a local service centre for the surrounding pastoral and agricultural district. The name Gulargambone derives from the Wiradjuri language, meaning watering place of many birds, a fitting description for a locality rich in birdlife along the Castlereagh River.
The town is affectionately known for its colourful galah sculptures that dot the main street, celebrating the region's abundant birdlife and giving Gulargambone a distinctive charm among outback NSW towns. Gazetted in 1883, Gulargambone made national headlines in 2000 when residents rallied to establish one of Australia's first community-owned post offices, preserving a vital service for the remote community.
