About Gumbalie
Gumbalie is a vast and sparsely populated outback locality in far north-western New South Wales, covering approximately 3,398 square kilometres. Located within the Bourke Shire along the Bourke–Milparinka Road, it lies in the traditional country of the Kurnu-Baakandji people. With just 23 residents recorded in the 2021 census, Gumbalie is one of the most remote localities in New South Wales. The area is characterised by flat plains, dry scrubland, and the Darling River system.
Gumbalie is home to Toorale National Park, which protects part of the historic Toorale Station — once one of the world's largest sheep stations. The park offers bush camping, birdwatching, and exploration of the restored Toorale Homestead precinct, a significant heritage site. Life in Gumbalie revolves around grazing, conservation work, and the rhythms of the outback. The nearest town with services is Bourke, roughly 70–100 kilometres away, making self-sufficiency essential.
Gumbalie falls under postcode 2840 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barwon electorate.
