About Hastings
Hastings is a small coastal and rural locality in the Huon Valley of southern Tasmania, situated approximately 90 kilometres south-west of Hobart near the town of Southport. Covering around 44 square kilometres, it recorded a 2021 Census population of 54 residents. The locality is renowned for the Hastings Caves, a significant thermal cave system with ancient dolomite formations.
The Hastings Caves State Reserve features the spectacular thermal pool for swimming and guided tours through the limestone cave system, making it one of southern Tasmania's key tourist attractions. The area is also close to the Lune River — the southernmost train in the southern hemisphere. Geeveston and Huonville provide services for residents, and Hobart is accessible in approximately 90 minutes. A private vehicle is essential for getting around this beautiful part of southern Tasmania.
