About Hermannsburg
Hermannsburg, also known by its Western Arrarnta name Ntaria, is an Aboriginal community in the MacDonnell Shire of the Northern Territory, located approximately 125 kilometres west-southwest of Alice Springs on the banks of the Finke River. The community sits within the rolling red hills of the MacDonnell Ranges and is home to 551 residents, of whom around 89 per cent identified as Aboriginal at the 2021 Census. Established as a Lutheran mission in 1877, the land was returned to traditional ownership in 1982 under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976 and is now heritage-listed.
Hermannsburg holds deep cultural and artistic significance as the birthplace of celebrated watercolourist Albert Namatjira, whose paintings of the Central Australian landscape brought worldwide recognition to the Western Arrarnta people and their country. The historic Lutheran church and mission precinct remain important landmarks, attracting visitors interested in the site's spiritual and artistic heritage. The community is serviced by Larapinta Drive and is relatively isolated, with Alice Springs providing the nearest comprehensive services including hospitals, shops, and the Alice Springs Airport for onward travel.
Hermannsburg falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
