Highland Plains is a small rural locality on the Darling Downs in Queensland, situated approximately 150 kilometres west of Brisbane near Toowoomba and the town of Dalby. The locality covers around 58 square kilometres of productive Darling Downs cropping and grazing country and recorded a population of approximately 60 residents at the 2021 Census. The area is typical of the western Darling Downs, with broad black soil plains supporting wheat, sorghum, cotton, and beef cattle.
Dalby, approximately 30 kilometres to the west, and Toowoomba (roughly 70 kilometres to the east) provide the main services for the district including hospitals, schools, and supermarkets. The western Darling Downs is known as one of Australia's most productive agricultural zones with exceptional black soil fertility. A private vehicle is essential as no public transport serves the locality.
