About Hyden
Hyden is a small town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, located approximately 292 kilometres east-southeast of Perth within the Shire of Kondinin. The town sits at an elevation of 210 metres on a vast agricultural plain and covers a statistical area of over 2,000 square kilometres. With a population of 384 residents, Hyden is a tightly knit community that serves the surrounding wheat and sheep farming properties of the eastern Wheatbelt.
Hyden is best known as the gateway to Wave Rock, one of Australia's most visited natural attractions — a striking 15-metre-high granite wave formation estimated to be around 2,700 million years old. The town also provides access to Mulka's Cave, featuring ancient Aboriginal rock art, and Hippo's Yawn, another impressive granite formation. A small but functional town centre offers a fuel station, motel accommodation, a caravan park, a hotel, and basic grocery supplies, catering to both locals and the thousands of tourists who visit Wave Rock each year.
Hyden falls under postcode 6359 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
