About Jagungal Wilderness

Jagungal Wilderness is a vast, uninhabited wilderness area within Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of south-eastern New South Wales. The locality is entirely within a designated Wilderness Area, offering outstanding ecological and scenic values and recording zero permanent residents in the 2021 census.

The Jagungal Wilderness is renowned among bushwalkers, ski tourers, and naturalists for its alpine and subalpine ecosystems, including snowfields, sphagnum bogs, and diverse native wildlife such as mountain pygmy possums and corroboree frogs. The Round Mountain and Jagungal circuit is a popular multi-day hiking route, typically accessed from Tumut, Kiandra, or the Snowy Mountains Highway. The nearest towns of Tumut and Cooma provide accommodation and supplies for visitors to the region.
