About Karawatha
Karawatha is an outer southern suburb within the City of Brisbane (Calamvale Ward), located approximately 22 kilometres south-east of the Brisbane CBD. Despite covering an area of around 8 square kilometres, the 2021 Census recorded a population of just 337 people, as the majority of the suburb is undeveloped parkland rather than residential housing. The suburb's name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning "a place with pine trees," reflecting the natural character of this largely forested locality.
The defining feature of Karawatha is the Karawatha Forest, a significant open eucalypt woodland reserve that serves as an important urban green space and wildlife corridor within metropolitan Brisbane. The suburb also hosts two notable educational institutions — the Islamic College of Brisbane and Faith Christian School of Distance Education — both located on the suburb's fringes adjacent to the forest reserve. With its predominantly natural character, Karawatha appeals to bushwalkers and nature lovers, while surrounding suburbs such as Stretton, Kuraby, and Woodridge provide residents with access to shops, public transport, and services.
Karawatha falls under postcode 4117 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Woodridge electorate.
