About Keilira
Keilira is a sparsely settled rural locality in the Lower South East of South Australia, covering a very large area of approximately 657 square kilometres approximately 300 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. With a 2021 Census population of 58 residents, it is a remote pastoral and farming community in the coastal hinterland of the Limestone Coast region. The flat to gently undulating landscape is characterised by mallee scrubland, dry farming paddocks, and seasonal wetlands.
The town of Keith or Naracoorte, approximately 40 to 50 kilometres away, provides the nearest shopping, schools, and medical services for Keilira residents. The Limestone Coast is known for its world-class wine regions including Coonawarra, its unique Blue Lake at Mount Gambier, and exceptional freshwater fishing. There is no public transport serving Keilira; a private vehicle is essential for all daily activities. The remote, flat coastal plains and wide-open skies define the character of this sparsely populated area.
Keilira falls under postcode 5275 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
