About Kiata
Kiata is a small rural locality in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, situated approximately 20 kilometres north of Kaniva in the Hindmarsh Shire council area. Covering around 121 square kilometres, the locality is set in the flat, open mallee and cropping country of the far west of Victoria, where broadacre cereal farming and sheep grazing dominate the landscape. With a population of around 64 residents, Kiata is a sparsely populated farming community characteristic of the Wimmera's remote western mallee country.
Kaniva, the nearest town to the south, offers a supermarket, primary and secondary schools, and community facilities, and is known as the gateway to the Little Desert National Park. The Little Desert, one of Victoria's most significant mallee reserves, lies just south of Kaniva and supports diverse native flora and fauna including the malleefowl. Kiata suits those engaged in broadacre farming in the Wimmera who value the wide open skies and uncrowded landscapes of western Victoria.
Kiata falls under postcode 3418 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
