About Kupartiya
Kupartiya is an extremely remote Aboriginal community in the eastern Kimberley region of Western Australia, covering an enormous area of over 11,000 square kilometres approximately 600 kilometres south of Broome near the Northern Territory border. With a 2021 Census population of 56 residents, it is one of the most isolated localities in Australia. The vast, arid landscape of the Great Sandy Desert and associated savanna scrubland characterises this remote country.
The Kimberley region is one of Australia's most spectacular and remote areas, with ancient rock formations, boab trees, and a rich Aboriginal cultural heritage. Halls Creek is the nearest town with basic services, approximately 200 kilometres away, accessible via the Great Northern Highway. There is no regular public transport, and the area is inaccessible to normal vehicles in the wet season. Life in Kupartiya is deeply connected to the traditional custodians and their ancient relationship with the land.
Kupartiya falls under postcode 6765 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Kimberley (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
