About Kynuna
Kynuna is a remote outback locality in western Queensland, covering an enormous area of approximately 8,452 square kilometres in the Channel Country approximately 175 kilometres north of Winton. With a 2021 Census population of 52 residents, it is one of the most isolated localities in Queensland. The locality is famous as a stopping point on the Landsborough Highway and for the Blue Heeler Hotel, a legendary outback pub.
Kynuna is steeped in bush legend — it is believed to be the location where Banjo Paterson wrote Waltzing Matilda at nearby Dagworth Station in 1895. The Combo Waterhole and Dagworth Homestead nearby are significant sites in Australian folk history. The Landsborough Highway connects Kynuna to Mount Isa in the west and the coast to the east. There is no public transport; a private vehicle is essential for this remote outback community. The legendary pub, outback history, and vast sky country define life in Kynuna.
Kynuna falls under postcode 4823 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
