About Lackrana
Lackrana is a small rural locality on Flinders Island in Bass Strait, Tasmania's largest island in the Furneaux Group, situated approximately 200 kilometres north-east of Launceston. Covering around 283 square kilometres, it recorded a 2021 Census population of 55 residents. The locality lies within the Flinders Council area, on an island known for its remarkable wildlife, granite peaks, and white sandy beaches.
Flinders Island is famous for the Killiecrankie Diamond — a topaz gemstone — found on its beaches, as well as mutton bird harvesting, wallaby hunting, and excellent abalone and fishing. The island is accessible by air from Launceston or Melbourne, and by periodic ferry services. Whitemark, the island's main town, provides basic services. A private vehicle is essential for getting around the island. The remote island lifestyle, extraordinary natural beauty, and abundant wildlife make Flinders Island a unique place to live.
Lackrana falls under postcode 7255 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (McIntyre) electorate.
