About Lake Lonsdale
Lake Lonsdale is a small rural locality in the Wimmera region of Victoria, situated approximately 280 kilometres north-west of Melbourne near the town of Stawell. Covering around 62 square kilometres, it recorded a 2021 Census population of 58 residents. The locality takes its name from the nearby reservoir that provides water storage for the Wimmera, set in the hilly country at the base of the Grampians Ranges.
Stawell, approximately 10 kilometres away, is the main service centre for residents, offering shopping, schools, and healthcare. The area is well placed for access to the spectacular Grampians National Park, one of Victoria's most visited natural attractions, with its dramatic sandstone ranges, wildflowers, and Aboriginal rock art. A private vehicle is essential; there is no public transport. Lake Lonsdale itself is used for fishing and water recreation by locals and visitors.
Lake Lonsdale falls under postcode 3381 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
