About Langhorne Creek
Langhorne Creek is a historic wine-producing town in South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula region, located approximately 55 kilometres south-east of the Adelaide city centre within the Alexandrina Council local government area. With a population of 444 residents across a large 164 square kilometre area, the town is defined by its world-renowned wine region, which has been producing grapes since the 1850s. Named after cattle drover Alfred Langhorne, who established a crossing on the nearby Bremer River in the 1840s, the locality sits at just 15 metres elevation surrounded by vineyards and agricultural land.
Langhorne Creek is the third highest grape-producing region in South Australia, with over 40,000 tonnes harvested annually, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Bremer River's seasonal flooding provides a unique natural irrigation system for the vineyards, one of very few such arrangements in the world. Frank Potts Reserve and Alfred Langhorne Park offer pleasant picnicking spots amid native flora and fauna, while the community supports active football, cricket, netball, tennis, and lawn bowls clubs. The area has a relaxed rural wine-region character that appeals to those seeking a lifestyle connected to food and wine culture.
Langhorne Creek falls under postcode 5255 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
