About Lawn Hill
Lawn Hill is a remote outback locality in north-west Queensland, located within the Shire of Burke approximately 340 kilometres north-west of Mount Isa. Covering an extraordinary 14,607 square kilometres of Gulf Country, the locality recorded a population of 63 at the 2021 Census. Lawn Hill is best known as the gateway to Boodjamulla National Park, featuring the spectacular Lawn Hill Gorge — an emerald oasis of lush vegetation and crystal-clear waters in an otherwise arid landscape.
Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park is jointly managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Waanyi people, for whom this country holds deep cultural significance spanning at least 17,000 years. The park encompasses Lawn Hill Gorge and the Riversleigh Fossil Fields, part of the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites World Heritage Area. Visitors and residents enjoy canoeing, walking trails, birdwatching, and fossil tourism, though the area's extreme remoteness means Mount Isa serves as the nearest major centre for supplies.
Lawn Hill falls under postcode 4825 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barkly electorate.
