About Livingstone
Livingstone is an outer rural locality near Darwin in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 48.5 kilometres from Darwin and 28.6 kilometres from Palmerston, within the Litchfield Municipality local government area. With a population of 443 residents across 50.5 square kilometres, it is a sparsely settled tropical locality characterised by large rural blocks and the bushland of the Top End. The suburb takes its name from a wartime airstrip named in honour of American airman John D. Livingstone Jnr., who was wounded in action over Darwin on 4 April 1942 and died after crash-landing at the newly completed strip.
Livingstone retains a strong connection to its wartime heritage and today offers a peaceful rural lifestyle in the tropical Northern Territory. The locality has a community-run rural recreation reserve that hosts a popular Friday night '34 Mile Bar and Bistro', a reference to the airstrip's original wartime designation, frequented by locals and visitors alike. The surrounding Top End landscape features tropical woodland and the broader natural assets of the Litchfield region. Residents typically travel to Palmerston or Darwin for shopping, schooling, and major services, with private vehicle ownership essential.
Livingstone falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
