About Llanarth
Llanarth is a vast remote pastoral locality in the Charters Towers Region of north Queensland, situated south-east of Charters Towers township and roughly 134 kilometres west of Townsville. The locality covers an extraordinary 4,945 square kilometres of Queensland's outback pastoral country, encompassing open grasslands, creek country, and savanna typical of the region. With a 2021 Census population of just 81 residents, Llanarth is one of the most sparsely populated localities in Queensland, characterised almost entirely by large cattle stations and pastoral enterprises.
The Llanarth area is dominated by pastoral operations, including cattle grazing and feedlot enterprises that take advantage of the region's extensive water resources and natural pastures. The Belyando and Suttor rivers flow through or near the locality, providing vital water infrastructure for farming properties. Day-to-day services and amenities are accessed from Charters Towers, a historic gold-rush town with supermarkets, schools, a hospital, and community facilities. Life in Llanarth is quintessentially outback Queensland — remote, self-reliant, and closely tied to the land.
Llanarth falls under postcode 4820 and is governed by the Charters Towers Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Kennedy, while state elections fall under the Traeger electorate.
