About Macorna
Macorna is a small rural locality in northern Victoria, located within the Shire of Gannawarra approximately 22 kilometres south-east of Kerang and 85 kilometres north of Bendigo. The locality covers around 134 square kilometres of flat irrigated farming country in the Tragowel irrigation district, with a 2021 census population of 67 residents. The name Macorna is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word for wild goose, reflecting the wetland character of the surrounding district. Macorna was historically served by the Yungera railway line, with the station opening in 1884 and closing in 1981, and remnants of this agricultural and rail heritage remain part of the locality's identity.
Macorna is a farming locality defined by irrigation agriculture, with crops including cereal grains, sunflowers, and irrigated pastures supporting the regional dairy and beef sectors. Kerang, the nearest substantial service centre, provides supermarkets, schools, medical care, and broader community facilities for residents of the surrounding district. The wider Gannawarra Shire encompasses a network of wetlands and lakes — most notably Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake — that attract significant birdlife and outdoor recreation interest. Macorna suits those seeking affordable rural land in Victoria's productive Murray-Darling basin, in a quiet and traditionally agricultural community.
Macorna falls under postcode 3579 and is governed by the Gannawarra Council (Local Government Area). For federal elections, residents vote in the electorate of Mallee, while state elections fall under the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
