Set at an elevation of about 298 metres on the Canola Way — a scenic farming route through south-west NSW — the town covers a large rural area of 171 square kilometres and recorded a population of 363 at the 2021 Census. The township dates from the early twentieth century, with Marrar Post Office established in 1902.
Marrar lies in the heart of a productive wheat and canola farming district, and the surrounding paddocks are a hallmark of Riverina agriculture. The Royal Hotel is a focal point for the local community, and the town has a notable tradition of Australian rules football — unusual for New South Wales — reflecting the unique cultural character of this part of the Riverina.
