About Maude
Maude is a small village on the north bank of the Murrumbidgee River in south-western New South Wales, located 55 kilometres downstream from Hay within the Hay Shire. With a population of 110 residents spread across an expansive 2,410 square kilometres of flat Riverina floodplain and semi-arid pastoral country, Maude is one of the most remote localities in the state. Established in 1861, the village holds cultural significance as the traditional boundary between the Muthi Muthi and Nari Nari Aboriginal peoples.
Maude punches above its weight for a settlement of its size, offering a general store, hotel, post office, and caravan park that cater to local residents and passing travellers. Maude Weir on the Murrumbidgee River is a popular spot for anglers, with yellow belly, Murray cod, and redfin all sought in its waters. The surrounding area supports irrigated market gardens fed by Murrumbidgee water, and the village's peaceful Riverina character makes it a favourite with fishing enthusiasts, grey nomads, and those who value the solitude of Australia's vast inland waterways.
Maude falls under postcode 2711 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
