About Milabena
Milabena is a small rural locality in north-west Tasmania, situated approximately 26 kilometres west of Wynyard in the Waratah-Wynyard and Circular Head local government areas. Covering around 45 square kilometres, the locality sits on and around the Dip Range, with the range's ridge line forming its western boundary. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 77 residents, and the locality has been farmed since the late 19th century — originally known as Tuckers Hill before being gazetted as Milabena in 1966.
The area is known for mixed agriculture, particularly potato growing and dairy cattle grazing, reflecting the productive farmland typical of Tasmania's north-west. The Detention River runs through the locality and features Detention Falls, a scenic cascade waterfall that adds to the natural appeal of the area. Wynyard and Burnie are the nearest service centres, providing shopping, schooling, and health services; a private vehicle is essential for all daily needs.
Milabena falls under postcode 7325 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
