It lies on the western slopes of the Warrumbungle Range in a productive grazing and mixed-farming district.
Coonabarabran, approximately 25 kilometres to the north-west, provides essential services and is widely known as the Astronomy Capital of Australia, owing to the nearby Siding Spring Observatory which hosts the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. The area offers dramatic views of Warrumbungle National Park and its distinctive volcanic rock formations. A private vehicle is necessary as no public transport serves the locality.
