About Montacute
Montacute is a small, mostly rural locality in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, situated approximately 15 kilometres east of the Adelaide CBD within the Adelaide Hills Council area. Located on Fifth Creek, the locality extends across roughly 29.5 square kilometres between the Adelaide suburb of Rostrevor to the west and Lenswood to the east, bounded by Castambul to the north and Norton Summit to the south. With a small population in the hundreds, Montacute retains a distinctly semi-rural character, with properties spread across a ridge landscape between Fifth and Sixth Creeks.
Montacute has a fascinating history rooted in colonial-era copper mining — copper was discovered here in 1843, one of the earliest significant mineral discoveries in South Australia. Today the area is known for its bush retreats, scenic drives through the Adelaide Hills, and proximity to the popular Cleland Wildlife Park and Mount Lofty Ranges. Residents enjoy the best of both worlds: a peaceful, leafy hillside setting with rapid access to Adelaide's eastern suburbs and the city centre via Montacute Road and the adjacent arterial network.
Montacute falls under postcode 5134 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Morialta electorate.
