With a 2021 Census population of 81 residents, Morundah is one of the Riverina's most sparsely populated communities, spread across an expansive 1,191 square kilometre area of flat agricultural land. The locality is characterised by grain farming and grazing, with wheat silos and a hotel among the few landmarks in this quiet outback settlement.

Morundah is best known for its annual Opera in the Outback event, which has attracted professional opera companies including OzOpera and Victorian Opera to perform for the small local community — a remarkable cultural tradition in such a remote setting. The Newell Highway passes through, connecting the locality to Narrandera in the west and Lockhart to the east for essential services including shops, schools, and medical facilities.
